The Game

Follow Aoife on their journey to reconnect with their past, nature, and ultimately themself. Explore the land, forage for wild plants, craft bespoke dishes, and delight mysterious otherworldly clientele. Along the way, Aoife will learn about the plants around them, the folklore told in the area, and their family's past.

Explore a rugged and wild landscape

Of white roads winding by the edge
Of bare, untamèd land,
Where dry stone wall or ragged hedge
Runs wide on either hand

  • Forage plants along the way. Manage the space in your bag and find the perfect plant for your dish!
  • Identify Plants, learn about the real wild plants of Ireland as you accumulate knowledge in and out of the game.
  • Cook beautiful dishes with the bounty you've gathered on your trails. Take your time assembling bespoke dishes for your mysterious customers.
  • Uncover the past as you interact with your otherworldly neighbours.
  • Rewilding starts within. Join Aoife as they learn to live a simple life in the wilderness. Repair abandoned equipment and decorate your wild camp.
  • Meet the locals, listen to their stories, learn from their tales, and enjoy their company when they visit Aoife for a cuppa.
  • Relax and find stillness in nature.

Development

Created in Ireland with love, Good Folk Cafe is inspired by our own experiences of life in Ireland and the tales that have been shared with us.

We've sung in pubs, listened to tales told by an oral storyteller, tasted plants on our walk in the wilderness and visited spiritual sites.

We've even shown our game to trad musicians, and the live piece they did is featured in our ambience teaser.

Such a cool, I mean really cool concept, I've thought about this kind of chill and informative for a long time. I hope more people are going to appreciate this kind of game, and I hope the team can bring a wonderful experience to players.

Hello, I am a English to Turkish translator and I would like to support your game with free Turkish localisation. Is it possible?

Join our community on Discord! There is already some discussion going on about the game translation

¡Espero que salga en español! Realmente la estética del juego y el concepto me parecen hermosos.

The development team is called "Not Here Not There" - and unfortunately, their name is also a very apt description of this game.

WARNING - the writer of this review is a middle-aged, college-educated Asian male, with a strong inclination toward task-based activity and has had a lifelong involvement with history-themed RTS games (as if it wasn't obvious from my multiple projects on itch.io so far). Keep in mind that this bias may have coloured my expectations and perception of this game.

This game may be your cup of tea, if you are already into the foraging lifestyle - and enjoy seeing what you know (of Irish plants I guess) reflected in this game. But I think I will be passing this and waiting for Haunted Chocolatier or Mandrake to drop first. I am aware that this is meant to be a slow, cosy game - but progress is so slow and seemingly imperceptible that it goes from being cosy to simply just numbing.

At the very bare bones of it, Good Folk Cafe is a game where you forage for ingredients and prepare meals for eldritch creatures, who somehow have managed to scrounge human-designed artefacts which we would otherwise consider as junk hardware parts.

It's got potential but if things stay the same way as the demo shows, it is going to be neither here nor there.

Perhaps this review is very harsh but I see many red flags.

Number one, the loops.

The gameplay loops might be interesting but so far they feel monotonous and very much same-y. Perhaps it is because this game is still deep in development so this is all you have to work with. The lack of a proper tutorial also leaves some of us in a state somewhat ... disoriented. You are not told how to prepare ingredients - I closed my first night down early without feeding anyone because I did not know that you had to click the fae spirits who are queueing up to feed. Nor are you told, either, that there's a cooking minigame or that you can use items in the cooking interface to prep food further (we expected that this would be done automatically).

Number two, the writing and the UI design.

There's Fran, the Storyteller. I found his recital too long winded and I mostly skipped to the next day (I'm a reader not a listener), thinking I'd just read the transcript of his first story, the "yellow well" but I found it to be so rambling and inconcise that I might have well been reading the freshest word salad ever to be showcased on Booktok. I understand that not everone in real life must be a polished storyteller .... but I thought this was supposed to be a game, after all, not a philological exercise. The worst part was that there was such a massive wall of text against a colour scheme that obscured UI elements, squashed into a column so narrow that reading what Fran said the other night was nearly impossible.

Less difficult to figure out were what the spirits were asking for - but again, this is dangerous. From reading the transcripts of these creatures' chatter - very beautifully written but alas not very informative - I was asking myself many times over, "Does this customer actually want to try something new, or does it actually want a dish it's had before?" I decided to err on the side of caution although it is hard to say if ever at all what effect my approach had on th game especially after seeing what other players had encountered on youTube.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your feedback. The game is still fairly early in development, so it's really useful to understand how you feel about the game.

- Gameplay loops. Now that we have the overall loop figured out, our plan is to go back to each gameplay loop and make them more interesting and varied.

- Tutorial. UX is a battle of attrition. We don't want to swarm the player with tutorial boxes, so we are improving step by step. Everytime we get feedback that one part of the game is hard to understand, we iterate on it.  Getting your feedback is really important for that!

- Storytelling. Those stories are not written by us. We went on a trip to Donegal to meet local musicians and storytellers. Fran is an actual Seanachaí - an Irish myth teller - we met, and it's his voice we hear in the game. We just recorded him on the fly as a test for the demo. The final version of the game will be a lot more polished in terms of quality. Having said that, it's a very specific style of storytelling, and we will stay true to that.

- UI. We are looking for help with both UI and UX. It will be much better in the final game, I promise!

- The Faes being mysterious characters that you'll get to know a bit but will never fully understand is a core part of our theme and, as far as I understand myself, is also a big part of the Irish mythology.
We want to make the gameplay of trying to guess what type of dish they like as fun as possible.

What would have helped in your case to make that part of the experience more enjoyable?

If there was one thing I would change, really change, it would be the pacing.
Rather than have the game move from day to day I'd make it move from week to week, just so that players would then be prompted into understanding that some things in this game are seasonal - it provides faster changes of scenery, and also forces them to put a little more brain power into this game rather than simply just turning it into a simple click fest where one feeding session seems to look too much like the last one at any given point in time. That is just MY opinion, though.

Oh... interesting! We do want the seasons to have a big impact on the game, so going by weeks would solve some of our issues. It would also slow down the pace of the experience (over weeks) without slowing down the pace of the gameplay (the opposite actually since seasons will have an impact on plants)
We'll munch on this. Thanks!!!

Really good game! I made a video on it :)

Aww thank you for the video!! It’s always so useful to get to watch playthroughs. We learn so much from them!

This game has the same kind of warmth coming from it that a game like outer wilds has, you can very clearly see the attention to detail and love that has been put into this game and its amazing. I was SO shocked when I had a visitor and was suddenly listening to an entire recorded story, I was so invested in it I almost forgot about the gameplay itself, such a nice game and I really hope this game gets all the recognition it deserves.

Yes, those are the actual recordings of the real life Fran. We recorded them on the fly this time, we'll have much better recordings in the final game!!

(+3)

Very calm experience. The atmosphere, the music, and the art fits so well. Really looking forward the full game.

btw, I ran into a bug. When cutting food ingredients, some pieces just hide behind the chopping board after cutting. I sometimes can pick them up with mouse cursor hover around the empty chopping board and saw a popup showing there's a food piece. Sometimes they just vanished without a trace.

(+2)

Thank you!

It's a physics bug. Sometimes the food cut sinks into the cutting board. I'm planning a big pass on the physics in the winter,

Hey! I stumbled across your game and it caught my attention, so I had to check it out. I was curious, are you handling everything yourself, or do you have an artist, developer, or animator working with you?

We are a small team, if you check the description we listed all the amazing people contributing to the game.

(-1)

Yeah, I understand. Btw, we could connect on Discord if you're comfortable with that. It might be easier to talk there and get to know each other a little better.

need the full release immediately so i can quiet quit my job and open a fairy cafe in the woods fr

Bless devv!

Thank you! We do feel blessed by your awesome support 😇

(1 edit) (+2)

Am I the only one that had troubles guessing how cooking works? The game is really cool tho I think once I get it I will be addicted lol

It could be a bug, or a bad UX. It's hard to know without more details.

Could you post some screenshots or a video on our discord? We will be able to help from there.

belive they make it easier

I absolutely love this game! I definitely wish I had her occupation haha, the only issue is that for some reason the game really hates cutting dandelions, and it will freeze for a full few seconds. That's really the only thing, everything else is smooth, the music and style is beautiful, and the demo is tons of fun!

(+1)

Thank you!

Yeah we have some serious optimization work to do on the cutting.

This is one of my favorite game, the grafic is so beautiful, the game make's you relax so much, but if i need to say somthing i don't like is that for now there is only english for language. if in future make the game has more language, this game can probablity peak (oviusly i say of it only words, no linguage dialouges).

(-1)

We will support as many languages we can!

Good

Such a beautiful and cozy game! I like the idea of needing to guess the tastes of each creature! The only thing that needs to be fixed imo is the part in which we listen to the old man's stories, the voiceover is kinda distracting? it would be so much better if the voice were more subdued and there was calm bg music to soften the echo effect. Other than that this was a super pleasant experience! Can't wait for the full game release^_^

Thanks for the good words!

The recordings in the demo are recording we made on the fly while listening to Fran's stories.

We will have professional recording in the final game!

Ohman do i love this demo, i love the art style and how when you go foraging it shows what you stopped at and not just a sprite of the plants grouped into one little mini game, the only complaint is that its a little hard to understand what each spirit wants in there salad (im assuming there spirits) but other than that its wonderfull :D

Aww thanks! We really wanted to emulate the joy of foraging as I'm a forager myself :)

Figuring out and tweaking the guidance for the fae(spirit) taste preferences are one of the big topics on our todo list. But it's a tricky one to get right, so getting feedback about it is super valuable to us.

(1 edit)

aaa this was sooo beautiful!! tragically short demo, cant wait for the full game ;D the music and stories hit home for me lol.

Awww yes! Hopefully we can get you more content soon :) And I'm glad you like the music and stories it something I felt that we really had to get into the game and get right for this experience to work. Cheers

(+1)

This was really fun, the only glitch was that the food would sometimes disappear while being cut up but I'm so excited for the full game to come out

Deleted 32 days ago

Thanks for the report! I can't wait till it gets fixed as I'm always so sad when I start losing ingredients to that bug :(

this lowkey addictive

(1 edit)

Foraging addiction is a real thing! We have a few cases in our team ;)

I feel like I'm being called out ;)

Its very good game, i played it on linux through lutris and it crashed few time (i think could be fixed by some config) but overall very good experience .

Oh wow, I didn't know that was possible. If you know a simple fixes that will make the game work better for you, don't hesitate to let us know!

(+1)

So cute and cozy! Can't wait for the full release!

Thank you!!! Make sure to wishlist us on Steam, it really helps us in our quest to get funding.

This is amazing! Can't wait for the full game!!

Thank you! More to come soon, stay tuned!

Too cozy~

(1 edit)

We assume that the level of cosiness experienced in the game might be too much for some.

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ittttttt

Thaaaaaaank you!!!!

cool game

Yay! Thanks~

Great aesthetics!

Thank you :)

I'm in love!! Everything about this game feels comforting and simple (but in that good simple way, you know?). I did encounter one bug where the plants would glitch below the cutting board after being sliced. Sometimes they had only gone invisible and I could still pick them up, other times they were wholly inaccessible. It didn't ruin the experience though, just thought I'd bring it to your attention! I hope that more Irish culture is shared in the future versions (maybe some information on each creature? Unless it's already there and I just missed it). I'm super excited for a full version; wish listed it on steam the second the demo ended. Thank you for this lovely game!

Hey thank you thank you thank you! Yep the cutting bug is on our to fix list~ And yes! A big chunk of the game that isn't there yet in the demo is the cultural elements but we want to make sure we do all our homework first before putting it in to do it justice. This is where a lot of our time and effort will go to. Hopefully we'll get a small slice of it in Narrative Demo iteration that we're working on.

Sweet calm game

Thank you for the walkthrough video!

We always learn so much by just watching people play!!!

(+1)

Walking through lush greenery to calming music, finding plants, and looking them up in a field guide was a really great experience!

I'm not sure if I was searching in the wrong place or if it was some kind of bug, but I couldn't get to the cooking part.

I'll also post my gameplay video just in case it's helpful.

my playthrough

Hello Tsuneko,

Thank you so much for the gameplay video; it's really helpful for us to see the problem.

So, in the Foraging map, when you forage plants, the bottom part of the inventory is the overflow. It's meant to be used when you have too many plants in your bag, and you want to switch plants. It is discarded when you go back to the Homestay.

Basically, you want to put your plants in the upper part of the inventory.

It's a known issue with the UX of the bag. We will improve it in the future.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I played it again!
It's fun to see all the different Fae! Cooking is fun!
After finishing cooking, I saw the beautiful plating in the screenshots on this page and realized it's okay to put multiple of the same kind on top.
And the folk tales were amazing!
I can't understand English, so I don't know about the actual recording, but when I looked at the log, it was transcribed verbatim, and it was great to really feel the voice of the storyteller!
When this is finished, it seems like it will be not only fun as a game, but also a great work for preserving culture, meow~

(+1)

Thank you for giving the demo a second chance!!!

We want to connect with more local storytellers, poets, musicians, and singers. There are so many stories, songs, and tales that are not very well-known and that are really interesting!!
So there will be a lot of that in the final game!

(+3)

I’ve been loving this game! I also love the stories, which brings to mind maybe you should have an option for subtitles there. Also, a little hint button may be nice because I was a little lost on what to do in the beginning. But I really did enjoy playing, especially after I figured it out lmao! It has the same cozy vibes as Creature Kitchen to me.

(+1)

Thank you!!!

Yeah, Subtitles are pretty high on our list. And we are working on making the start of the game a little bit more guided. Thanks for the feedback!

nice game!

Thanks!

(+2)

Perfect, I absolutely love it. Shout-out to the artists and designers who made this masterpiece!

The artists and designers thank you!!!💚💚🙏

This game is absolutely lovely! Hope for a saving option asap!!!

(+1)

Thank you! We'll be looking into the save since many people have been mentioning it. Totally didn't expect people to stretch the demo out long enough to need a save :D

This game is super fun and I love playing! But can someone tell me how to save? Every time I leave I have to reset and I can't find a save button. ;-;

(1 edit)

Thanks for the kind words!!

We didn't put a save button in the demo yet. To be honest, we didn't expect people to play that much...

It's been asked a lot so I'll be activating the save system in our next milestone.

Ohhh that makes sense! The game is super fun and I'm excited to see more of it in the future!

Lovely game, I especially enjoyed the overnight animation and getting tested on the plant IDs after foraging - I thought that was an interesting way to get me to pay closer attention. Music and ambience are really sweet and enjoyable!

Tech report: I'm on Mac and was able to play via the itch app. Only issue was that when I went to Cook, my computer crashed - my screen turned gray with music still playing and I wasn't able to exit out of the app. The same thing happened to me with the game Tiny Bookshop when I accidentally changed the settings to make it more high-res, so I think it's partly an issue with my outdated macbook and low RAM, but figured I would share so you had the information!

(1 edit)

Thank you so much for the detailed information. It really helps nailing down those bugs.  I'll take a look as soon as possible.

will there be a mobile version in the future, i dont own a pc

There might be one day. I think the game would work well on Mobile. But I won't lie to you; it is not going to happen anytime soon.

I would love that very much, hope its possible a little earlier than expected:3
