‘Summon a Sweetheart’ is a short visual novel-esque game, about a depressed loser named Penelope. She gets so lonely… that she summons an eldritch monster to be her girlfriend. Unfortunately, she didn’t read the fine print. She needs a gift, and she needs one fast! Surely, her depression cave of a room should have something, right? I’m sure this won’t go wrong at all!

In other words: give the monster lady gifts that suck, and have cruel and unusual things happen to you as a result.

Warnings

This game contains . . .

  • Depictions of severe depression.
  • Brief descriptions of mild body horror and very mild gore.
  • Mentions and depictions of suicidality.

Features

  • 10 endings
    • 1 - "Good" end
    • 1 - Neutral end
    • 8 - Bad end(s)
  • *Edit: I've gravely underestimated how long this was. While most endings are very short and abrupt, for one of the longer endings, it seems 30ish minutes is an average time. If you're trying to get every ending it will likely breach the 40min- 1 hour mark.
  • A very rudimentary "crafting" system, with 2 special items to craft.
  • Several piles of trash and filth to rummage through .
  • Unfunny jokes.

This game has it's own site page on my neocities: you can find the Walkthrough, Devlog,  and more info about the characters here!

Final V2 Update!

  • Updated credits to show those who translated the game, and  reflect currently used plugins.
  • Slight graphics touch-up.
  • Fixed some stray spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Fixed images not preloading correctly.
  • Menu can now be accessed at any time in game.
  • Item menu is now one centered button.
  • Fixed windowskin so there is no longer a pixel wide space in text boxes.
  • Added an "end" and "changelog" button in the title menu.

I'm very grateful to those who helped translate, and make music for this game. It's entirely thanks to them that this game is now accessible for more people, and is even more special, with a sound of it's own. Thank you all for your kind, hard work! 💜

Buttons! For you!

I didn't anticipate such a warm reception to this game, thank you all who decided to give it a shot! While I truthfully don't want to touch this anymore, since it isn't constructed the greatest- I'll be making more games in the future! (That will *definitely* be way cleaner and easier to work with than this thing lol)

This game was made in roughly a month, for the purpose of being a sample project, and a learning experience. This is my first ever game, I don’t know what I’m doing. So, some things may be a bit rough around the edges.

very nice!!!!

Totally love the artstyle+aesthetic and finding all the different endings+flavour text was super fun!!

Simply to say... I absolutely adored this! The characters and art are wonderful and I loved that there wasn't really a "good" ending.

Albeit, I got stuck on what to do for one of the endings, but honestly I'm glad I did cause I ended up going through your neocities on the game and loved seeing your insight on the whole process of it's creation! Truly one of my favourite kinds of things to look at, it was really inspiring to see how things started and what you learned and I thank you for sharing that as someone who wants to put something out there too. Maybe I'll also finally open RPGMaker MV after years of owning it lmao-

I think you nailed the kind of toxic dynamic they both have if you really look at them for more than what they are on the surface. Also, seeing the inspirations you had for them and the game as a whole, really neat! I love that Galatea is inspired from a myth that you used as a way to say that she represents the warped sense of an "ideal woman", SO COOOOL!!

Again, the whole game really loved it! Loved reading about it! I really hope you make more in the future! ^^

100/10 oh my fucking gawd

The loser lesbian trope x bossy eldritch lover scratched the best parts of my brain ohhhhhh myyyyyy goshhhhhh i love you

this was fun, i enjoyed playing it! the art is very nice and i love the colors a lot!! galatea's design is really pretty too ( ̄3 ̄)╭~~

I LOVED IT! Character designs are so awesome! <3

This game was super fun! I loved the pretty colors and the sheer number of ways Penelope could fumble with her offering 😂 Great job!

AHHH THIS GAME IS SO CUTE!!! I found it through a playthrough on youtube and immediately had to stop the video to play it for myself first. ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT. Galatea is so cute (when she isn't killing or cursing you lol) and poor Penelope just needs a hug TvT Hope to see more from you in the future!!

Kinda late to comment since I played it like a month ago or smth- the game is really good, kinda got the bad endings first and then realized I can craft something... But overall, great game! :D (Galatea is now an eldritch creature in my dreams but I don't mind XP)

hello!! first of all AWESOME game but I've been having troubles playing it after download... it tells me some assets are missing and it doesn't go past the introduction screen, not even showing the menu... the game itself said to report this bug if encountered, so I hope this is the right thing to do!

I purposefully checked the game when it was deployed to make sure nothing was missing, and left every file in there even if they were unused... so maybe it was an issue trying to unzip it?  Can I see the actual screen you're seeing when it gives you this error and what version you're using?

screenshot unfortunately won't load but the screen I'm seeing goes like this:
Game has encountered a bug. Please report it.

this occurrence most likely has to do with the fact that I'm playing on Mac and using Whisky to run .exe, so there's probably some sort of problem with that. I've tried playing directly from the Mac .zip but that didn't seem to work either, although im gonna try more later. thank you very much for your cooperation and im deeply sorry to bother you, have a great rest of your day!

I have gotten literally EVERY SINGLE ENDING but the first one. Tf do i do?

ik im 2 months late but give her the wine bottle as a gift(its to the left of the screen and a little bit up from where you start)

I give up ;-; What does the eldritch god even like....

(+1)

(+4)

I wish penelope was real

(+2)

GO MY YURIIIII

(+1)

I love Galatea's design! She reminds me of an anglerfish lol I'm glad I got the good ending on the first try but I'm starting to think it's not a actual good ending.. dang it XD This was a lovely game to play though:3

I love this game so much, the art it's so beautiful !!

(+4)

ELDRITCH YURI YESSSS

(+2)

I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS TBH BUT I DIDN'T KNOW BOTH OF THEIR NAMES FOR SOME REASON 🥲💔 (I love Galatea's design tho ;-;)

(1 edit) (+3)

for a first game this is super good! the art is nice, the color scheme fits the vibe well, the story is both good and well written, its nice short and sweet. my only issue(s) is the description of the eldritch monster in the intro, which (seeing as you can see her) is a bit repetitive imo. my suggestion would be to use it to add to character depth (eg when mentioning the eyes say something about not wanting to be looked at)...

one other thing, the fact that you can only read one part of the book is a bit weird. i thought it would be used for a secret ending (eg something like "i know eldritch people like protein, so i thought protein powder would make a good gift" "or here is this plushy, it has huge sentimental value") you could still have the same ending, just a bit of extra dialog, plus it might help learn the system a bit more ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ over all 9/10

(hope this helps and i'm exited to see you continue)

(+2)

this so peak twin im in the fandom now

(1 edit) (+4)

out of all of those endings, neutral was the best omg that was so cute and worth the amounts of times she killed me

(+1)

Played on video today had a fun time I look forward to more of your work!

(+1)

When you get to the pearly gates, show them this comment. They'll know to let you in.

Ayee wassup Jesus

(+2)(-11)

I was gonna ask how do I forcefem this twink but maybe I should have been asking how to forcemasc them instead? Either way I hope the eldritch horror helps her clean

I was so excited when I saw this posted on twitter. The description got me so excifed and oh my gGOD when i opend the game the MUSIC OH MY GOD HTE MUSIC IS SO AMAZING I LOVE IT. AND THE COLOR PALETTE?? ANDTHE CONCEPT OH MY GOD FOR A SHORT VISUAL NOVEL GAME I LOVE THIS SO MUCH

I got all ten endings and honestly the way that Penelope depicted is so beautiful to me. An embodiment of someone who can do nothing but cope in such awful ways to the point of feeling inhuman combined with someone who isn't human is such a good combination and ending 6? oh my god the codependency penelope doesn't have a real humant o understna dor help her because everyone elese has left or is just gone and i genuinely shed tears galatea is really just a sit in and even though it seems like something new all the 'again and again' stuff amkes me realize that it'll just become another part of the cycle oh ym godd im so ill im so ill i mso ill and the neutral ending feelign somewhat sufficient when its actualy not a true emotional bond

the music feels very nostalgic and penelope genuinely feels so real to me
This was an amazing game  and im still crying

(+1)

From the customization (keyboard configuration) at the very start, to the art, to the music that plays throughout the whole story, there is a huge amount of effort put into just a "silly practise" game. The idea is a neat and original one, and its execution was even better. Although short, the experience was a memorable one.

(+4)

God this game hit me in all the feels, this is beautiful stuff

(+4)

This game is great! it would be cool if you made a dating sim with penelope as the love interest 0o0

(+1)

ending 8 had me rofl.

banger first published game man!!!! i really aspire to get something like this out just like you, im going through the same thing with the whole "ive had rpg maker for like a decade and never finish my projects" thing LOL

(+2)

Please don't mind the cringe voice I gave Galatea but I loved this game!! Cool concept and art style, beautiful color pallet and a bunch of endings that were so unpredictable lol Looking forward to your future projects :)
(+1)

esse jogo é muito bom e super divertido de jogar, ri horrores em alguns finais e em outros fiquei tipo: caraca pesado!

muito bom super recomendo!

(1 edit) (+9)

I would KILL to see more of this, in any form, especially after the good ending i just wanna see more of their interaction after the first night I just love this so much <3

(+6)

Like a comic or anything hell yeah bro. I wonder if it would be allowed to make a bit of a fan AU aftermath after one of the endings  (Coping with the fact penelope won't have a "good ending" but it perhaps is just mundane life stuff after the sugar related endings).

(+3)

i want more of this

(+4)

INKY THIS GAME WAS PEAK OH MY GODDDD I HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME PLAYING! I loved the "good" ending and the diary ending the most! I laughed so hard at the meme part omgnsfdsjkfdsfslkfsdjkf o e e a o o e e e e a o

(+5)

THIS WAS SO FUN AND AWESOME!!! thank you thank you thank you for making this game ToT it was so fun and they were both so pretty (both character design + art style) I also really liked the color pallet and detail and stuff. It's always fun to happen upon an artist that I like on another platform like I watch ur content on YT but didn't expect to find a videogame! Hope you keep making more ^-^
