The Mariana Sequence
A downloadable game
The Mariana Sequence is a standalone sequel to Tryptic, keeping that same "game within a game" aspect, and was developed in NESMaker. The game won Best Narrative in the NESdev contest Byte-Off V and was a finalist in the MAGFest 2026 Indie Retro Showcase.

The Mariana Sequence is an experimental platformer for the NES with an adventure-choosing mechanic that makes the game uniquely different each time you play, as every choice you make as a player affects the game's seed. You take the role of Cal, a subject in the Mariana Sequence Project, and are tasked with using a piece of software, a game that seems simple on the surface. The object of the game is to explore, uncover secrets and hidden paths, until you discover the correct sequence of events to reach the end and uncover the true The Mariana Sequence. Nothing in the game is randomized, meaning you can take notes and map out paths to track down the true Sequence.

The Mariana Sequence ran a successful Kickstarter releasing the title on physical game cartridges.

Hi! My name is Garik, and I liked your game The Mariana Sequence. I’m interested in translating retro games, and I want to create a fan‑made Russian translation of your game for the Nintendo Entertainment System version. I guarantee that I won’t charge for the translation, and if any money is received, it will be sent to you. I’d be glad if you give your approval for this translation!
This is cool and retro! :)
Honestly, this looks like such a creative and ambitious project! I really love the “game within a game” idea, and the fact that every choice affects the sequence makes it feel like something you’d genuinely want to replay and explore. Winning Best Narrative and becoming a MAGFest finalist is seriously impressive—you should be proud of what you’ve built.
By the way, are you currently looking to hire or collaborate with any developers, artists, or other creative people for your future projects?
Hey! I came across your game and checked it out for a bit — the whole retro style looks really interesting. I wanted to ask, are you currently looking for an artist, developer, or animator for the project?
'game within a game" lore super eerie. def requires a notebook ready by your desk.
This game is overall pretty good. The story and concept are great, but I feel the controls are a bit rough… maybe it’s just a skill issue though lol. Not sure if the areas where the attack doesn’t work are bugs or intentional… will have to mess around more with it and see.
What’s the “Set Mode” option for? [EDIT: I think this modifies the final sequence]
This is a really interesting concept. How long have you been working on it? Do you have a Discord or email for the project?
Why though?
