Playable Solo

Title!

Is it playable solo? I REALLY love this game, and only just recently realized it was based on the game (I kickstarted it a while back, never played it yet though...), and am very interested! The hard part is getting other people who may be into it, and also actually running a game, cuz I'm...not great at that, haha. Mostly curious so I can at least enjoy it myself if I pick it up but no one wants to play/run it.

Somewhat related, I really wish I'd seen the High Frontier 4 All Kickstarter, cuz it seems like a way to get people into a super cool game.

I frequently get this question and there’s 2 ways of thinking about this:

1. A significant number of people buy the game just to read it; and that’s a solitaire activity I’ve definitely intended the game to support.

2. I haven’t yet written a solitaire mode but it is something I keep looking at doing. My biggest reservation is that the rules load is already too big and having one person take on that load is genuinely going to be a problem. There’s also not too many places that a single person is going to have an impact in the future - a crew is kind of the minimum group size to do so and I’ve already cheated by halving the crew size from 8 to 4.

Nonetheless, I’m sure people have tried to play solitaire. And I’ve pencilled in a couple of solitaire options for update 5 that’ll be “supported”.

Hell yea, I've bought so many books here that I've just read for their awesome content (Triangle Agency stands out for this), and this sits in that spot too...though I'd love to play it, haha.

I suppose 'playing solo' can be a couple things; I get what you mean (if I'm understanding right) with one character being overloaded, especially in any sort of crew environment. The other way I thought about is just playing multiple characters, which you can do with any game, and after typing this I sorta wonder why I asked!

Thanks for replying though, appreciate it. Hopefully I can grab this book sometime, just gotta let the wallet loosen a bit first.

I play solo, and its definitely a 'hard mode' but there's some ways to make it work. The main thing is to give yourself two archetypes. You take the age and ability scores of one, one service history from both, and take all of the skills from both (that your crew quality allows). Duplicate skills take the higher skill level +1. You also start with 1 Glory to make up for the lack of other player's bumps. There's some small niche problems that may arise from playing solo, such as not having the required workers to efficiently build bases at the facility level, so you can either just pretend you have 4 crewmembers when needed, or roll with the punches like I do- which while they tend to make the game harder, you go down avenues not previously thought of. Like in my current game I'm trying to build my first base on the venus aerostat, but since I don't have 4 workers, I'll need emancipated robots since they count as workers. But that requires me to not only emancipate robots- which is a whole game changer- it also encourages me to spec into robots earlier on, as this is literally year 1 of the game., and also get the infrastructure to print them. The whole process takes much longer than a simple Industrialization operation, but its a unique experience that I think is worth the extra time.

if you have any photos/folios/other artefacts of play you want to share, feel free to do so.

I plan to write out post-year comments for each year along with any relevant pictures :) My aim is to go for as long as the system allows (including A Lot Of Zeroes), although I'm not exactly fast due to still trying to learn how to play the game. I've spent the past week trying to learn base building and I'm still not entirely knowledgeable on it lol. It does help that I'm an avid fan of High Frontier though, cause that's a whole ruleset I don't have to learn since I already know it.

Update 6 makes the core game playable solo.
