My submission is a DMG GameBoy game with ROM, and I’ve packaged the web version via the binjgb emulator, the same used by GB Studio. Since I haven’t configured GameBoy Color compatibility (i.e., it’s a “grey cartridge” GameBoy game rather than a “black/clear cartridge” game that has a chosen palette), the browser emulator allows changing the color palette.
I mentioned this in my description:
In the browser, the GameBoy emulator (binjgb) supports using [ and ] keys to change color palettes. Some of these palettes have different colors for sprites vs background tiles. This is consistent with how the GameBoy Color behaves when playing non-color games, but for the purposes of GBJAM judging (which requires submitted games to have 4 or fewer colors), please disregard these extra palettes.
Note these palettes are built into the emulator and not chosen by me (the same would exist in any GB Studio DMG game). I did get this comment on my submission though:
Well, I’m sorry, but I suggest using another engine for the jam, I can’t disregard these extra palettes because it breaks one of the rules of GBJAM
I’m wondering if this is a real concern, considering it’s a limitation/feature of the emulator rather than the game, and would require extra effort to turn off. Nowhere in the game itself do I mention the ability to change palettes, so it was just in the description. Most players just use the default green DMG palette and don’t even know.
If this is actually a concern, for future jams should I just not mention the built in palette-switching keys, and/or should this be called out in the jam rules? Most of the palettes do adhere to the 4-color limit so it feels strange to not at least mention the option.
