I keep finding outdated, incomplete or plain incorrect information, so one more compilation of all the gameplay tricks as of v1.1.18:
SPOILERS
P1- Rats are looking in the horizontal direction of the Rat King. If they are in the same vertical column, they are standing up instead.
P3- Skeletons - nothing to note (unlike previous versions of the game)
P4- Gargoyles always come in pairs (vertical or horizontal) which are looking at each other (look at their tiny red eyes). There are 4 pairs.
This means if you've got two adjacent boxes totalling 8, high chance of Gargoyle pair.
Pairs of Gargoyles CAN touch each other, so Gargoyles can be adjacent and not looking at each other (there's just 2 more of them in the area).
P5- Green Slimes are revealed by the Slime Witch's dropped scroll.
P6- Minotaurs are guarding chests: every Minotaur has a chest in one of the 3 boxes diagonally or horizontally behind it. Before its chest has been found and opened, the Minotaur is looking AWAY from it; afterwards, it turns around and gets a little annoyed reaction.
This means every chest has a Minotaur in one of the six adjacent diagonal or horizontal boxes (never vertical).
P7- Guardians: there are 4, one in each quadrant of the field (fun fact, their shields are a hint!). Thus they are never in the lines and columns of the dragon.
P8- The five purple Slimes are only ever in a C-formation barrier surrounding the Slime Witch, against an edge of the board. This formation CAN be in a corner.
Thus there is never an 8 value anywhere in the middle of the board.
They're easy to spot as adjacent boxes suddenly climb to numbers around 16, 24 and 32. Go ahead and snipe the Witch in the middle!
P9- The Lovers drop 9 gold AND a healing scroll. Using the Dragon's column as a central axis, they are in the same box in the same row -- once you've found one, you know where the other is.
P10- The Mine King is always in one of the 4 corners of the board (there is often a bomb or mimic in the others). It drops 10 gold and a scroll that deactivates all mines (WITHOUT revealing them).
P5- The Rat King drops a scroll that reveals the location of all Rats.
Any 5 that is not revealed by the Slime Wizard or surrounded with ? boxes is the Rat King.
It CAN be killed for Rat Pacifist stamp.
P5- The Beholders hide all nearby boxes in a diamond (2 in all cardinal directions, 1 diagonally) with a ? until they are defeated. There's only 2 of them.
You can often deduce their position from just one or two revealed ? boxes.
P1- The Slime Witch is always against a board edge and surrounded with P8 purple Slimes, and drops a scroll that reveals all remaining green and purple Slimes. She's only 1 hit, go ahead and snipe her as soon as you find her entourage!
P11- The Mimic's threat value IS counted by surrounding tiles, and there is only one -- once you know where the P11 is, all chests are safe.
It looks and behaves like a regular treasure chest, only triggering when you click it a second time after first revealing it.
P100- The Mines can be disarmed by clicking the Mine King's scroll. They then drop to a value of 0 and give 3 gold (for a total of 27 gold).
This means it's a good idea to aim for the corners so you can figure out where the Mine King is and snipe him the second you have 10 hearts, then collect the Mines gold and level up.
P0- The Chests (but not the Mimic) are guarded by a P6 Minotaur in one of the six adjacent diagonal or horizontal boxes (never vertical).
3 of them drop 5 gold, 2 drop additional healing scrolls.
P0- The Gnome teleports to an empty box when clicked, until there's none left, at which point he drops 9 gold.
You can't literally "corner" him, as even when backed into a corner, he will teleport away if there's any remaining empty box on the board. He does NOT steal/open chests.
Extras (again, as of v.1.1.18):
-The dragon's egg is in one of the 8 surrounding tiles. It costs 0 hearts and drops 3 gold.
- Walls come in pairs (vertical or horizontal), 3 times. They all take 3 hits and give 1 gold.
You can get the Clear Board stamp with walls remaining and less than the maximum score possible. Maximum score (365) does require smashing all walls which makes it notably harder.
- The Dragon has a threat value of 13. You CAN kill it and collect the 13 gold before the end of the game (it only triggers when you claim).
Stamps:
- Lovers Survive: Claim the crown without killing Romeo or Juliet.
- Clear Board: Claim the crown after killing all enemies, including the Lovers and Mines (you CAN have walls remaining; not sure about chests).
- Future Generation: Claim the crown without destroying the dragon's egg.
- Rat Pacifist: Claim the crown without killing any rat (you CAN kill the Rat King).
Multiple stamps can be earned in one game, but not all 4 of them (as Clear Board is incompatible with the others). As of v.1.1.8 it IS possible to get the 3 others in one game ("Full Pacifist Run", lmao), but highly reliant on luck and finding the Rat King really quickly.
Phew! I think I got everything this time. Thanks everyone in this game's community for pointing out all these details over the years.
If there's even more fun facts I missed, feel free to add!
Glad you enjoy!
In broad strokes, to become an avatar, you must first get marked by an Entity by brushing with it often/significantly enough. Some Entities are easier to encounter than others (eg lots of opportunities for the Corruption through the plot in season 1); if you're struggling to get a rarer specific Entity, you can try spamming visiting the library or Archival Storage during your work day for random opportunities.
Once you first get marked by an Entity, you'll get the option to "answer the call" on weekends, which will list the Entities currently available for you to pledge yourself to if you so wish. Once you've picked one, you can't change to another in this playthrough, but they don't get dibs, so if you get the call of the Corruption super early that doesn't mean that you'll never get a chance to instead pledge yourself to the Eye later on. :) You can also "lose" the interest of some Entities so they might come and go; for instance, you can fight off the Lonely or the Eye by hanging out with your loved ones or refusing to do Institute work.
And once you have become an Avatar, you'll need to regularly feed your patron if you don't want consequences. (But maybe you want consequences? :) )
Playing as an Avatar is totally optional, but it does have lots of achievements and unique scenes (including nsfw -- this is the only way to "date" Entities).
Ooohh there's been more updates to the ending?? Time to re-re-play it!
And I exactly agree re: applying translation and playing Sennaar that way -- though I did input my notes and translation in the game, just never using the validation tool that smoothes out the final translation. Also, for some of the words and concepts in Trevosa, there aren't necessarily direct English translations, which I loved :)
Nope! Partly bc realistically, the characters finding this out should react negatively, which I didn't want to inflict on players when this was intended to be a horror-fantasy-enabler (same reason no one ever finds out if you're banging Elias). And also bc I didn't want to have to write and code all that for every possibly character lmao
Enjoy the scoobydoo horror office comedy 🙂↕️
I haven't been able to find the last 3 documents, but could still make a very educated guess for my last 3 characters considering the remaining titles, and this did nothing to take away from my huge enjoyment of this game. The little twists like
(spoilers)
the gender variations, including neutral gender, the compound words, the words that cannot be translated but can be understood, the succession rules being based on things one wouldn't expect based on habits of male primogeniture, usurpation throwing chaos into the expected line of succession... that's something I love in language/culture-discovery puzzles and so rarely see!
Congrats and I'd love to see more like this from you!

oh lmao yeah I didn't recognise your username but ah ok this is by the creators of My Friends The Monster Trainers and The Case Of The Dungeon Descent which I adored, NO SURPRISE HERE, keep it up you wonderful minds 👍
I haven't done one ordered list of all secret achievements, but here's one for how to get some specific mini-variations of the endings (some of which give secret achievements), and there's questions and hints of all types in the comments on the AO3 page :)
How wonderful! I had a great time with the puzzling and figuring out the story; even guessing some of the twists ahead just made me feel smart and just made it harder when I eventually found the scene that revealed them. Great job on the HerStory-like writing to make each separate scene interesting in various order of discovery. Love the pixel art style also. A lovely little gem!
So cute! It feels like a wonderful tribute to monsters-collecting games but with its own mechanics. I had a blast.
I'm very impressed with the personality all characters got from so little text. Loved having two takes on some events, and quickly becoming able to tell right away which friend wrote this letter -- I love these kids and want to protect and nurture them!! So wholesome ;w;
I want to keep playing in this world for hours and hours :)
there's no "good ending", there's a few non-standard early endings (where you die, mostly) but that aside the game always ends at the end of S4/start of S5 with the canon setting :D of course, some players may find that ruling a domain as an avatar of some unspeakable horror with their traumatised and/or also monstrous partne is an ideal and happy ending!
Loved it! I was just having some light fun and enjoying Eli's fun "teehee i'm totally not an alien" lines and incredible design, then I started getting void 1 stuff and got completely sucked in. Really enjoyed the slightly-off and casual horror scenes, and the True End hit harder than I thought. I love Eli and will remember them for a long time! (If they let me)
Thank you for the walkthrough, that helped a lot and I had a lot of fun exploring to get all the endings.
There's just the Skip button being finicky sometimes (not always showing correctly as on or off, and quite a few times I would suddenly skip quickly through completely new ending text and have to reload to actually read it). And the start of the True End dialogue had everything suddenly really slow down for a couple lines before normalising again (possibly bc of the animation or music?). Even with that, very pretty game and polished-looking UI.
